🌵 Cowboy Prickly Pear Cactus
(Consolea rubescens or Opuntia rubescens)

Add a touch of tropical flair to your collection with the Cowboy Prickly Pear, also known as the "Roadkill Cactus" for its unique flat, wide body shape—though we prefer the name "Cowboy" for the way its arm pads grow symmetrically on either side, like a cowboy’s stance.

🌵 Key Features:

🌎 Native Habitat: Native to Puerto Rico and the Leeward Islands, this cactus flourishes in tropical environments and can grow into a tree up to 10 feet tall in its natural habitat.

🌱 Growth: Fast-growing and easy to cultivate in pots, the Cowboy Prickly Pear cactus is ideal for both indoor and outdoor spaces (in non-frosty regions).

🌵 Unique Appearance: With dark green, spineless pads loaded with distinctive character, this cactus is both low-maintenance and visually appealing.

🌵 Perfect For:

🏡 Indoor Gardening: Thanks to its manageable size and rapid growth, the Cowboy Prickly Pear cactus thrives as a potted indoor specimen.

🌴 Patio Gardens: Adds a sculptural, tropical vibe to patios, enhancing outdoor spaces with its bold, symmetrical shape.

💚 Low Maintenance: Spineless and easy to care for, it’s an ideal choice for beginners and cactus enthusiasts alike.

🌵 Shipping & Planting:

Two Sizes to choose from: 1' or 2' Tall.

Your Cowboy Prickly Pear will arrive bare-root, carefully selected, wrapped and packaged to ensure pristine arrival and easy stress-free planting. All plants come with planting, watering, and general care instructions for a successful start.

Design Ideas with Prickly Pear (Opuntia)

Design Ideas with Prickly Pear (Opuntia)

The Opuntia family—commonly known as prickly pear—offers incredible versatility and visual interest for any landscape or container garden. With their rounded pads, vivid blooms in shades of yellow, orange, red, and pink, and a variety of pad shapes and colors, prickly pears create striking contrast when paired with other cacti and succulents.

In the landscape, some species make excellent groundcovers, while others—like the Santa Rita “purple” prickly pear—serve as standout focal points or elegant complements to mixed plantings in pots or garden beds.

Prickly pears are as tough as they are beautiful. They thrive in full sun, tolerate extreme heat, and require minimal water. Many varieties are also cold-hardy, easily enduring chilly overnight temperatures.

Whether you’re designing a drought-tolerant garden, adding interest to a patio planter, or seeking a low-maintenance yet dramatic accent, the prickly pear is a resilient and eye-catching choice.

Totally Wow'd!

I love love love love my new Cowboy cactus! I have been buying a lot of succulents and little cactus plants lately from other shops but just tried the Cactus Outlet and this 2-foot Cowboy cactus. Gotta say this purchase has definitely fulfilled my itch for cactus. (Best to just buy big and get it over with!) So incredibly pleased! I bought because of their emphasis on proper packaging, plus their reviews. They weren't kidding about proper packaging because it took a while to unpack both cactuses - a good thing! These plants were so well wrapped, it would have been impossible for them to incur any damage during shipping, even if dropped IMO. Let's say I am hooked and will buy all my cactus from the Cactus Outlet going forward.
