FAQ – The Cactus Outlet

FAQ

If you have a question in mind about caring for your cacti or ordering from The Cactus Outlet, chances are someone has wondered the same thing!

Read the answers to our most frequently asked questions below. If your question still wasn't answered, feel free to contact us.

How much light does my plant need?

All of our plants will tolerate a wide variety of lighting conditions. Inside, our plants will grow in a bright room in your home or in a room with direct sun through a window. Outside, our plants will enjoy any sun condition you have to offer.

Can my plant tolerate colder temperatures?

We do not recommend planting our plants outside in the ground in Zone 8 and lower. Most of our plants can tolerate temperatures in the mid-20s at night with proper frost protection, such as blankets, frost cloths, or burlap.

How much water does my plant need?

Cacti and succulents do not like to keep their feet (roots) wet. When watering, thoroughly saturate the soil. In a pot, you want to see a minimal amount of water coming out of the bottom to confirm that the entirety of the soil is saturated.

Let the soil completely dry out between waterings. You may have to water indoor plants every 3-6 weeks depending on conditions.

The same rules apply for watering outside: thoroughly saturate the soil and let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Please contact us with any additional questions about watering you might have.

What materials do I need on hand to care for my plant?

Your package arrives and you’re very excited to open it up! If you have ordered a sizable plant you want to have the following materials on hand to wrangle your cactus or succulent.

  • An old piece of garden hose or irrigation drip line
  • A pair of leather gardening gloves, at minimum. Welding gloves are best for handling our plants and provide your hands with the best protection.

How is my plant packaged?

Our plants are professionally packaged for shipping. All of our plants are shipped bare root. Bare rooting is the process in which most if not all of the soil is removed prior to shipping. Our plants do not ship in their nursery container. We take great care and pride in the way our plants are packaged. Our plants are wrapped in bubble wrap and tape which should not be taken off until your plant is in its final home. The bubble wrap offers you and the plant additional protection while planting.

Make sure that your decorative pot is ready to receive your plant. If you are planting in the ground, make sure your hole is ready to receive your plant. Use an old garden hose or irrigation line to lift the plant out of its package and put the plant in its new home. Backfill with soil and gently compress the soil around the roots.

Do not water the plant for two weeks. Please contact us with any specific questions you may have.
