Nopal Prickly Pear

Image 1 Image 2 Image 3

Also known as Opuntia ficus-indica. This tree like prickly pear features large pads, large fruit and gorgeous orange flowers. Young pads of the Nopal prickly pear can be used in cooking. The Nopal cactus can grow up to 10 feet tall when planted in the ground.

The Nopal prickly pear is native to Mexico but has been introduced and cultivated in various arid and semi-arid regions worldwide. The Nopal has a distinctive pad-like structure, consisting of flattened, oval to round segments. It can grow to be a sprawling shrub or tree, reaching heights of up to 10 feet or more.

The Nopal prickly pear is well-adapted to warm and arid climates. It has good heat tolerance but may be sensitive to freezing temperatures. In colder climates, it is often grown in containers that can be moved indoors during winter or protected from frost.

Ornamental Uses:

Landscaping: Prickly pears are commonly used in landscaping for contrast in gardens, particularly in arid and drought-tolerant gardens.

Erosion Control: The extensive root system of the Nopal prickly pear makes it useful for erosion control on slopes or in areas prone to soil erosion.

Edible Fruits: In addition to ornamental uses, the Nopal prickly pear produces edible fruits known as tunas, making it valuable for both ornamental and practical purposes.

Drought-Tolerant Gardens: Due to its ability to thrive in dry conditions, the Nopal prickly pear is suitable for xeriscaping and water-wise gardens.

Culinary Uses:

The fruits of the Nopal cactus, known as prickly pears or tunas, are often consumed as a fresh fruit or used in various culinary applications, including jams, jellies, and beverages. The young emerging pads are commonly stir fried and used in a dish called nopalitos in Mexican cuisine.

Our shipping process guarantees your Nopal Prickly pear cactus will come to you in pristine condition and wrapped in a way that makes planting easy!

Prickly Pear design and application suggestions:

Opuntias, the prickly pear family of cacti, can be used in many different ways. In the landscape, the prickly pear family can be used as a very nice contrast to other cacti and succulents. The rounded pads, beautiful flowers of yellow, orange, red and pink plus different pad colors and sizes offer distinguished contrast in the landscape or in a nice container. Some prickly pear species can be used as a succulent groundcover. Some prickly pears, like the Santa Rita “purple” prickly pear, are ideal as unique pieces interspersed throughout the landscape or a nice contrast to a group of cacti and succulents in pots. Prickly pears are also very forgiving. They will tolerate the hottest parts of your landscape and like it! The prickly pear family also thrives on very little water and can take very cold overnight temperatures.

Why purchase our Prickly Pear?

Our prickly pears are grown in their native habitat right here in Southern Arizona. Raised outdoors with just the right amount of water and fertilizer, they come to you in their natural form. These plants do not come to you from a greenhouse. They are already hardy to whatever growing conditions you have to offer. You will not see any evidence of pads getting skinny and reaching for light. The prickly pears present the same appearance as you will find them in their native habitats.

If you want to plant them in a container for a sunroom, patio or window planter, great! If you want to take your new prickly pear cacti and plant them in the ground, also great! No acclimation needed. Our plants are ready to go!

Been looking for the green fruit bearing nopal forever!

And I've finally found it at the Cactus Outlet!! It is now enjoying life in my front yard in Northern California, amid lava rock, in full sun, mimicking the life at its former home Arizona. I can't wait that it produces me some green tunas! They are delicious!
