Cinnamon Prickly Pear

Cinnamon Prickly Pear Cactus – A Colorful Touch for Your Garden 🌵✨

Also known as Opuntia rufida, the Cinnamon Prickly Pear is a vibrant prickly pear cactus that adds both color and texture to any landscape. With its similar growth habit to the Angel Wings or Bunny Ear Prickly Pear cactus, this variety stands out with its unique cinnamon-colored spines and occasional purple hues.

Key Features:

Vibrant Colors 🌈: The Cinnamon Prickly Pear cactus features vibrant green pads speckled with cinnamon-colored glochids (small spines) that give it its signature look. Depending on the sun exposure and cooler weather, the pads can develop a stunning purple hue, adding extra character to this already beautiful prickly pear cactus.

Flowers 🌼: This prickly pear cactus produces yellow flowers that add a burst of color during the blooming season, perfectly complementing its unique foliage.

Cold Hardy ❄️: The Cinnamon Prickly Pear is quite cold-tolerant, able to withstand temperatures down to 15°F. This makes it an excellent choice for gardeners in colder climates who want to add a touch of the desert to their landscape.

Fast Growth 🌱: This cactus is a fast grower, reaching up to 3 feet tall and spreading out to 8 feet in diameter when planted in the ground. It's perfect for creating a lush, low-maintenance garden accent.

Ornamental Uses:

Landscape Accent 🌵: The bold colors and unique form of the Cinnamon Prickly Pear cactus make it an excellent accent plant in any garden. Its beautiful hues contrast nicely against other desert plants.

Container Gardening 🪴: If you're looking for a tough, low-maintenance potted plant, the Cinnamon Prickly Pear is a great choice. It thrives in containers and adds visual interest to patios, decks, and balconies.

Low-Maintenance 🛠️: Like other prickly pears, the Cinnamon Prickly Pear is very low-maintenance once established. It requires minimal care, making it perfect for both novice and experienced gardeners alike.

Cinnamon Prickly Pear in Oregon

After losing all my nopales due to a two week long stretch when nighttime temperatures dropped into the high 20’s I decided to try A Cinnamon Prickly Pear which supposedly can tolerate temperatures as low as 15 degrees. Hopefully that’s the case. At this point, the cactus seems to be doing really well.
