Southwestern Barrel Cactus

Image 1 Image 2 Image 3

Ferocactus wislizeni. The Southwestern barrel cactus is the most prominent of the barrel cacti of the Sonoran desert featuring stunning red flowers and light red recurved spines. Very old specimens can grow to be five to six feet tall when planted in the ground.

Ferocactus wislizeni is native to the arid regions of the Southwestern United States, including Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and parts of northern Mexico. The cactus is covered with long, recurved spines, giving it the "Fishhook" name.

Cold Tolerance:

Ferocactus wislizeni is adapted to hot and arid climates but has good cold tolerance compared to many other cactus species. It can withstand temperatures down to about 10-15°F or lower for short periods. However, protection from prolonged exposure to severe freezing temperatures is advisable.

Ornamental Uses:

Xeriscaping: The Southwest Barrel Cactus is a popular choice for xeriscaping and water-wise landscapes due to its adaptation to very hot and arid conditions.

Rock Gardens: Its barrel-shaped form and spiny appearance make it a suitable addition to rock gardens and succulent gardens.

Container Gardening: Ferocactus wislizeni can be grown in containers, making it suitable for patio or balcony gardens.

Drought-Tolerant Landscapes: The Southwest barrel cactus is well-suited for gardens that emphasize drought tolerance and minimal water requirements.

Architectural Interest: The architectural form and spines provide visual interest, especially when grouped with other succulents.

This cactus thrives in full sunlight and is adapted to dry conditions, requiring minimal water. Like many cacti, it is low-maintenance and can tolerate neglect. The Southwest Barrel Cactus is appreciated for its hardiness, striking appearance, and suitability for water-wise gardening.

5 gallon plants average 9" wide and 6" tall.

Why purchase our Barrel Cacti?

Our barrel cacti are grown in their native habitat right here in Southern Arizona. Raised outdoors with just the right amount of water and fertilizer, they come to you in their natural form. These plants do not come to you from a greenhouse. They are already hardy to whatever growing conditions you have to offer. Our barrel cacti present the same appearance as you will find them in their native habitats.

If you want to plant them in a container for a sunroom, patio or window planter, great! If you want to take your agaves and plant them in the ground, also great! No acclimation needed. Our plants are ready to go!
